NEW ORLEANS – Monique Taylor had 20 points and 13 rebounds as the University
of New Orleans defeated UCF, 64-61, in women’s basketball action at Lakefront
Arena on Monday night.
The Golden Knights (2-1) opened the game on a 15-2 run after the Privateers
(1-0) shot 6.3% (1-for-16) from the field. UNO got its second field goal of
the game courtesy of Monique Taylor at 10:16, who followed that with a string
of five points from the foul line. Despite a four-minute span without a
basket, UCF took a 28-18 lead into the intermission.
UNO came out with a 15-8 run to open the second half as the Golden Knights hit
only 20% from the field in the first six minutes of the half. A jumper by
Jasmine Smiri (14 points) tied the scored at 38 at the 12:46 mark then hit the
three-pointer that finally put the Privateers up for the first time in the
game just 30 seconds later.
The two teams stayed within three points of one another down the stretch. With
the score 55-54 in favor of UCF, Lora Ruddy hit two foul shots to give UNO a
one-point lead. With eight seconds remaining, she made two more points from
the line for a 58-55 advantage before freshman Claudia Johnson (Ripley,
Miss./Ripley HS) drained a three-pointer with two seconds left to send the
game to the extra session.
UNO outscored UCF by a 6-3 margin in the overtime period. Taylor sank the
game-winning basket with 46 seconds remaining and Joevone Markey scored an
insurance bucket with seven seconds to spare.
The Golden Knights were led by junior Marvelous Washington (Palm Beach
Gardens/Palm Beach Lakes HS), who had a game-high 23 points, including
11-for-12 from the foul line. Sophomore Takira Allen (Tallahassee/Quincy
Shanks HS) added 19, while junior Adrienne Billings (Titusville HS) grabbed a
team-high 10 rebounds.
UCF committed 25 turnovers and UNO had 15. The Privateers also had the
advantage on the boards, 51-46.
The Golden Knights visit Southern Mississippi on Nov. 27 for a 5:30 p.m.
matchup before returning Louisiana for a Nov. 30 game at Nicholls State.
