SOUTHERN MISS. DROPS UCF WOMEN’S HOOP

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Lana Lewis sank 15 points as the University of Southern Mississippi dropped UCF, 73-45, in women’s basketball action at Reed Green Coliseum on Wednesday evening.

USM (2-1) opened on a 9-2 run in the first four minutes of the contest and went up 12-5 at the 12:24 mark. The Golden Knights (2-2) knotted the score at 12 with 9:23 remaining, but couldn’t hold onto the tie as the Eagles led, 31-25, at the intermission.

Southern Miss. continued to build its lead in the second half going up by 13 points (52-39) on a three-point jumper by Tierra Lassiter at 7:48. UCF tried to regroup with a timeout but allowed the Eagles to finish the game on a 21-7 run.

The Golden Knights fell victim to 23 personal fouls, including 15 in the second half, while USM had 13 total in the game. The Eagles capitalized on their opportunities at the foul line going 15-for-20. They also outrebounded UCF by a 40-28 margin.

Sophomore Takira Allen (Tallahassee/Quincy Shanks HS) had a team-high 13 points as the only Golden Knight in double figures. In addition to Lewis’ effort, Lassister contributed 14 points and Dana Jones had 11 points. USM’s Sonja Brown led all players with eight rebounds.

UCF visits Nicholls State on Nov. 30 for a 6:45 p.m. tipoff against the Lady Colonels before returning to Orlando.
