UCF TO FACE AUBURN IN THE NCAA SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIPS

ORLANDO - The UCF women's soccer team (18-4-0) will face Auburn
in the first round of the 2002 NCAA Women's Soccer Championships in
Tallahassee Friday. The Golden Knights are also in the same regional in
Tallahassee with Ole Miss and Florida State.
UCF will be making its eighth appearance in the NCAA Championships this
weekend. The Golden Knights have made the Final Four twice in school history
during the 1982 campaign and in 1987.
This season's NCAA Appearance is also the third in four years under current
head coach Amanda Cromwell. In 2001, UCF lost in the first round to Florida
4-0 in Gainesville. In 1999, UCF defeated Furman 1-0 in the first round of the
NCAA Championships before losing to No. 3 North Carolina 8-0 in the second
round.
The match with the Tigers will also mark the first time that current Auburn
coach Karen Richter faces her alma mater. Richter was a standout goalkeeper
for UCF from 1987-90 who later was an assistant coach at UCF from 1991-92 and
the head coach from 1993-98 before leaving to take the reigns at Auburn. In
six seasons in Orlando as the head coach, Richter was 64-44-9 at the controls.
Auburn, which is receiving votes in the Soccerbuzz.com and NSCAA Coaches Top
25 polls, was the No. 1 seed entering the SEC Tournament before losing to the
No. 8 seed LSU, 1-0.
UCF looks to continue its best season in school history Friday vs. the Tigers.
The Golden Knights are 18-4-0 overall, the most wins in single-season history.
The Golden Knights are fresh off their eighth A-Sun Championship after a 3-2
win over Jacksonville Saturday.
Friday's game time is still to be determined and will be released later in the
week. The winner of the UCF-Auburn match will face the Ole Miss/Florida State
winner Sunday in Tallahassee.
